Throughout its 23 year history Kogarah IEC has supported and prepared newly arrived students for the challenging language demands of an Australian High School.
Students are initially assessed and placed in a beginner, intermediate or advanced intensive English language program. Their social emotional and academic needs are constantly monitored and close links are made to keep parents and guardians informed and involved in the student's progress.
All programs focus on high student engagement and high expectation. Program design is directed at achieving enjoyable, challenging, meaningful and effective learning. With active participation of students in their learning, we seek to encourage all students to reach their highest potential and develop as independent, self-disciplined, co-operative learners.
Our approach to discipline is to provide a safe and supportive environment for learning and promote self-respect and respect for others.
Student welfare underpins all programs at the Centre. We strive to ensure that all students feel safe, secure and fully supported at all times accelerating opportunities for students to acquire adequate levels of language proficiency in a relatively short period of time. All activities are designed to promote self-esteem, self-confidence and resilience, all necessary qualities in the preparation of either a junior or senior high school curriculum.
The development of key study skills and attitudes is a crucial part of our educational intention for every student.
International Student Program
Kogarah IEC currently supports 56 enrolled international students. These students come from a diverse range of countries including China, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Japan. When international students arrive at KIEC, they are given excellent support preparing for their studies in Australia. They complete a student information workbook that helps them to understand the conditions of their study and routines for life at school. They are also given a guided tour of the local area and made to feel very welcome.
The international student team holds regular meetings for international students. At the meetings students access information and assistance from staff and socialise with other international students. Students' attendance and homestay arrangements are routinely checked and extra support is provided to students who are experiencing difficulties. The international student team, along with the class teachers, provide students with a welcoming, safe and supportive school environment that helps them to gain the greatest possible educational benefits during their time in Australia and prepare for the challenging demands of an Australian high school curriculum.
The international student team:
All staff members are experienced ESL teachers. The head teacher has worked at the International Student Centre as the SENIOR STUDENT ADVISOR and an experienced school counsellor is on site four days a week. Kogarah IEC has an international student coordinator who is available to help students at all times and monitors their progress carefully. The team also includes interpreters and dedicated administrative staff who advise the head teacher of any needs or concerns regarding attendance or progress for every student.
