The school opened in 1990 and has grown in reputation over the years.

Calwell High School has teaching teams based around the key learning areas of Mathematics, Science, English, Studies of Society and the Environment (SOSE), Arts, Technology and Physical Education and Health.
Extension courses are offered in Mathematics, English, Science, Studies of Society and the Environment and through elective units such as Indonesian. Students are actively encouraged to become involved in a range of national competitions and subject related enrichment activities.
Classes in the core subject areas are streamed from Year 7 to Year 10 and smaller classes provide extra support for students with learning difficulties in these subjects. Streaming allows us to effectively get resources to students while still providing educational challenges.
Our school offers a wide range of subjects including English, Science, Mathematics, Studies of Society and the Environment, Metal and Wood Technology, Food Technology, Textiles and Design, Art, Digital Photography, Ceramics, Computer Aided Drawing, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Set and Prop Design, Computing, Community Partnerships, Indonesian, Music, Band, Dance (for boys and girls), Physical Education, Sport, Media, Drama and QUEST (student leadership and mentoring program).
Student management at Calwell High School aims to assist all students to coexist in harmony with other members of their community. Certain expectations are outlined in the Calwell High School Student Agreement which each student and their parents/carers are asked to sign in recognition of their support of the Student Behaviour and Management Policy.

As a student at Calwell High School, students are expected to:
Attend every class, tutor group and school assemblies
Treat other students, staff, visitors and school property with respect
Comply with all reasonable staff instructions
Use non-violent methods to solve problems
Where circumstances warrant, be willing to present your bag for inspection
NOT SMOKE anywhere inside or outside the school buildings
Wear sensible clothing including appropriate footwear and abide by the Dress and colour Code Policy
Not possess alcohol, cigarettes or drugs at school
Not attend school when affected by alcohol or drugs
Value and respect school property and resources such as computers
Report or account for any damage to property
Be aware that students are not permitted to have visitors in our school without specific permission
Participate in excursions where required. These are often part of our curriculum but it is the students' responsibility to let other teachers know about these absences and to catch up on missed work
Present Student ID card when requested by any staff member and use only in the authorised manner
Use mobile phones in an appropriate manner that does not disrupt learning
